At the Intercare Wilgeheuwel Medical and Dental Centre, located in Roodepoort, we are seeking to recruit a Dental Assistant to join our professional team. This position will play a vital role in assisting dental professionals, including general practitioners and specialists, in delivering high-quality dental care. The successful candidate will also play a key role in ensuring the smooth administration of patient services within the dental clinic. CRITICAL OUTPUTS & RESPONSIBILITIES
As a Dental Assistant, your role will involve a variety of important tasks aimed at ensuring the effective delivery of dental care while maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for patients. Your key responsibilities will include:
Clinical Support:
- Work closely with dental professionals to provide effective assistance during clinical procedures, ensuring that all tasks are performed according to Intercare's protocols and standards.
- Prepare and organize the dental room and instruments before each procedure to ensure that everything is in place for the dentist.
- Assist the dentist with a range of procedures, including general and specialized dental treatments, ensuring patients receive optimal care and comfort.
Infection Control & Sterilization:
- Ensure that the dental room meets strict hygiene and cleanliness standards at all times. This includes adhering to sterilization and infection control protocols with regard to all instruments, equipment, and surfaces.
- Conduct regular sterilization of instruments, ensuring all tools are properly cleaned and sanitized to minimize the risk of infection and ensure patient safety.
- Ensure the disposal of medical waste, human tissue, and unused medicine complies with local legislation and clinic protocols.
Administrative & Patient Management:
- Facilitate smooth patient administration processes by assisting with patient record keeping, appointment scheduling, and the completion of relevant forms and documentation.
- Maintain accurate records and ensure that all documentation is completed in accordance with healthcare policies and legal requirements.
- Ensure that patient confidentiality, dignity, and safety are maintained at all times, in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and other relevant laws.
Laboratory Coordination:
- Coordinate laboratory work related to dental procedures, which includes completing lab slips, organizing the collection and return of materials, and ensuring all laboratory processes run smoothly and in a timely manner.
Consumables & Equipment Management:
- Monitor the availability of dental consumables and ensure that dental rooms are adequately stocked with materials, while also ensuring the economical usage of all resources.
- Report any equipment failures or potential safety hazards to the appropriate department to avoid disruption in service and to ensure the continued safety of both patients and staff.
Patient Interaction & Communication:
- Engage with patients in a caring and professional manner, providing reassurance during dental procedures and assisting with any concerns they may have.
- Educate patients on post-procedure care when necessary, helping them understand the steps required for a full recovery or maintenance of oral health.
Accountability & Safety Compliance:
- Take personal accountability for all actions, decisions, and omissions in the course of care delivery, ensuring that all duties are performed in line with professional standards and ethical guidelines.
- Be proactive in identifying potential risks to patient safety and immediately take steps to mitigate these risks by adhering to all clinic policies and safety protocols.
REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS
To be considered for the Dental Assistant position at Intercare Wilgeheuwel, applicants must meet the following qualifications and possess the necessary skills:
Educational Background:
- A Grade 12 qualification is required for this position.
- Completion of an approved training course in Dental Assisting, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience, is necessary.
Registration:
- Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Registered Dental Assistant is required for this role.
Experience:
- Previous experience in a customer-focused service environment, such as a medical or dental clinic, will be advantageous.
- Familiarity with specialized dental procedures will also be beneficial.
Technical Skills & Knowledge:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (MS Office) and basic computer skills are essential.
- Knowledge of dental terminology, treatment codes, and procedures related to general and advanced dentistry will be advantageous.
- Familiarity with the GoodX dental management system or similar software will also be beneficial.
- A solid understanding of infection control principles and sterilization techniques is necessary to ensure compliance with healthcare regulations.
- The ability to handle laboratory coordination, manage dental room inventory, and assist with patient records is essential.
