Location: Olifants Rest Camp, Nxanatseni Region, Kruger National Park
Reporting To: Camp Supervisor


Job Description:
A vacancy exists for a General Worker at the Olifants Rest Camp within the Nxanatseni region of the renowned Kruger National Park. The successful candidate will play a key role in maintaining the cleanliness, hygiene, and overall upkeep of the rest camp facilities. The position reports directly to the Camp Supervisor and offers an opportunity to contribute to one of South Africa’s most iconic conservation areas, ensuring that the camp remains an inviting and safe environment for both visitors and staff.

This role requires attention to detail, a strong work ethic, and a commitment to health and safety standards. The incumbent will be responsible for cleaning chalets, public facilities, and surrounding areas, while also supporting general operations within the camp.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Cleaning and Maintenance:
    Perform a wide range of cleaning duties across various areas within the camp, including chalets, ablution blocks, and public spaces. These tasks must be completed to prescribed set standards, ensuring that all areas are kept clean and hygienic at all times.

  • Inventory Management:
    Assist in controlling and managing inventory items such as cleaning supplies, linen, and tools. Ensure that sufficient supplies are available and properly stored. Report any shortages or damaged items to the relevant department for timely replenishment.

  • Reporting of Faults and Abnormalities:
    Identify and report any abnormalities within the camp, such as faulty equipment, maintenance issues, or health and safety concerns. Ensure that maintenance faults are escalated for prompt resolution, helping to maintain a safe and functional environment.

  • Assisting with Supply Collection:
    Occasionally, the General Worker may be required to assist with the collection of supplies from various locations. This includes ensuring that all necessary items are safely transported and stored for future use.

  • General Camp Support:
    Provide general assistance around the camp, including moving equipment, assisting with camp setup for events, and supporting other teams with their operational tasks.

  • Laundry Duties:
    Assist with the laundry operations of the rest camp, including the cleaning and maintenance of guest linen and towels. Ensure that all laundry duties are performed to high standards and that cleanliness is maintained throughout the laundry area.


Skills and Competencies Required:

  • Hygiene and Housekeeping Skills:
    The incumbent must demonstrate a solid understanding of hygiene and housekeeping practices to ensure that all areas of the camp are kept in a clean and presentable condition.

  • Knowledge of Health and Safety:
    Familiarity with workplace health and safety standards is essential. The General Worker must adhere to all health and safety guidelines to prevent accidents and ensure a safe environment for staff and guests.

  • Communication Skills:
    Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are necessary. The ability to communicate effectively in English is essential for reporting faults, interacting with team members, and ensuring smooth operational processes.

  • Supervisory Skills (Added Advantage):
    While not mandatory, previous experience in a supervisory role will be considered an advantage, as it may provide opportunities for growth and responsibility within the team.

  • Tool Handling and Aftercare Knowledge:
    A good working knowledge of tools, how to handle them safely, and ensuring proper aftercare and storage of equipment is necessary.


Qualifications and Experience:

  • Minimum Qualification: Grade 12 (Matric Certificate)
  • Experience: Prior experience in a similar role, particularly in a housekeeping or general worker capacity, would be advantageous. Knowledge of working in a camp or park environment is highly desirable.

Paterson Grade: A1
