Job Description:
We are looking for a skilled and experienced Rear-Tipping Dump Truck Operator to join our dynamic team within the Gedex Division, part of our Mining and Metals Business Unit. This role is critical to our operations as you will be responsible for safely transporting and tipping materials in our underground mining environment. The ideal candidate will have experience in trackless mining and a proven ability to maintain a high standard of operational safety. You will play an important role in ensuring that our production targets are met while maintaining the safety and efficiency of the site.
Qualifying Criteria:
- Education:
- Minimum requirement of Grade 11 or an equivalent qualification.
- Licensing & Certification:
- Possession of a valid Code 08 or 10 driver’s license.
- MQA Competency B Certificate is mandatory.
- Relevant qualifications and licenses specific to trackless mining and heavy machinery operation are required.
- Experience:
- 1 to 3 years of experience working in an underground trackless mining environment, with strong knowledge of dump truck operation in such settings.
- Language Proficiency:
- Proficient in English, with an understanding of at least one other official South African language from the 11 official languages.
- Legal & Health Requirements:
- Must be a legal South African citizen with a clear criminal record.
- Must be declared medically fit for the position by an Occupational Health Practitioner (OHP).
Key Responsibilities:
Shift Operations:
- Operate within a structured rotation of shifts to ensure seamless workflow and production continuity.
Equipment Operation:
- Operate rear-tipping dump trucks efficiently, ensuring optimal hauling and tipping of ore to designated stockpiles, conveyor belts, or areas as instructed.
Safety Inspections:
- Conduct pre-shift and post-shift safety checks to ensure the dump truck and other relevant machinery are in safe working order. Complete daily checklists and report findings.
Monitoring & Reporting:
- Maintain a keen sense of awareness while operating machinery, particularly when the truck is in motion or engaged in hauling activities. Report any unusual observations or faults immediately.
Maintenance Assistance:
- Assist with routine preventative maintenance during the shift, including refueling, oil changes, lubrication, and other necessary servicing of the truck. Participate in weekly servicing and ensure the vehicle is in prime working condition.
Documentation & Logs:
- Accurately complete all relevant documentation, including checklists, incident reports, and trip logs. Ensure proper reporting to supervisors or the control room.
Team Collaboration:
- Follow all instructions provided by supervisors and collaborate with team members to ensure that production goals are achieved without compromising on safety or operational standards.
Safety Compliance:
- Adhere to all safety regulations, particularly the standards outlined by the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA). Ensure that operations are conducted safely and that all potential hazards are mitigated.

Preventative Maintenance:
- Monitor and report any mechanical issues or inconsistencies that could affect the dump truck’s performance. Ensure that all machines are properly maintained according to the operational schedule, and follow up on service schedules, license disk renewals, and other maintenance requirements.
Customer and Team Communication:
- Engage with team members and supervisors to ensure smooth communication. Provide real-time updates and communicate any challenges or changes to the work plan effectively.
