Job Description:

We are seeking a motivated Learner Surveyor to join our Mineral Resources Business Unit. This entry-level position provides a valuable opportunity for hands-on experience and development in mine surveying, supporting both underground and surface operations. You will be part of a dynamic team within the Gedex Division, where your role will involve assisting experienced surveyors, learning essential survey techniques, and maintaining survey equipment. This position is ideal for someone who is studying towards a qualification in mine surveying and is looking to gain practical, on-the-job experience in the mining industry.


Qualifying Criteria:

  • Education:
    • Grade 11 or equivalent qualification.
    • Mathematics and Science will be advantageous.
    • Studying towards a qualification in Mine Surveying will be an added advantage.
  • Skills & Knowledge:
    • Basic numeracy skills are required and essential.
    • Interpersonal and communication skills are essential.
    • Proficient in English and at least one other official South African language.
    • Competency B Certificate from MQA is required.
    • Computer literacy and experience with MRM/survey systems will be advantageous.
  • Experience:
    • 3-5 years' experience in a mining environment, or having worked in a survey or sampling department will be advantageous.
    • Ability to read and interpret mine working plans will be advantageous.
  • Additional Requirements:
    • Flexibility to work on Sundays and public holidays as required.
    • South African Citizenship.
    • Clear criminal record.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Survey Department Support:
    • Assist the Survey Department in providing best practices and efficient support for underground and surface measurement activities.
  • Underground & Surface Measuring:
    • Aid surveyors with underground and surface surveying tasks, including installing survey pegs and grade pegs as instructed.
  • Equipment Handling & Maintenance:
    • Carry, clean, and maintain survey equipment, ensuring that all tools are in good working condition for use in daily operations.
  • Measuring & Interpretation:
    • Demonstrate the ability to read and interpret tape measures for precise measurement and assist with interpreting mine working plans as needed.
  • Compliance & Safety:
    • Adhere to the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) standards and follow the company’s safety motto: "Nothing is so important that it cannot be done safely." Ensure all work is conducted according to the required standards and specifications.
  • Team Collaboration:
    • Take instructions from the responsible shift supervisor and ensure effective collaboration with the team to meet operational goals.
