Job Description:

We are looking for a dedicated Learner Surveyor to join the Modder East division within our Mineral Resources Business Unit. This entry-level opportunity is ideal for someone looking to build a career in mine surveying. You will work closely with experienced surveyors, gaining practical experience in both underground and surface measurements. As part of this role, you will assist in maintaining survey equipment and executing precise surveying tasks, while adhering to our strict safety protocols. This is a perfect chance for individuals who are studying towards a qualification in mine surveying and seeking real-world exposure in the mining industry.


Qualifying Criteria:

  • Education:

    • Grade 11 or equivalent qualification.
    • Mathematics and Science will be an advantage.
    • Studying towards a qualification in Mine Surveying is advantageous.
  • Skills & Knowledge:

    • Basic numeracy skills are essential.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills are required.
    • Proficiency in English and any other official South African language.
    • Competency B Certificate from MQA is required.
    • Knowledge of MRM/survey systems and computer literacy are advantageous.
  • Experience:

    • 3-5 years' experience in a mining environment, or experience working in a survey or sampling department will be advantageous.
    • The ability to read and interpret mine working plans will be beneficial.
  • Additional Requirements:

    • Flexibility to work on Sundays and public holidays.
    • Must be a South African Citizen with a clear criminal record.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Survey Department Support:

    • Provide effective support within the Survey Department and apply best practices for underground and surface measuring.
  • Survey Tasks:

    • Assist with installing survey pegs and grade pegs as instructed.
    • Ensure the accurate use of measuring tools such as tape measures to maintain precision in surveying tasks.
  • Equipment Handling:

    • Carry, clean, and maintain all survey equipment, ensuring that tools are always operational and ready for use.
  • Instruction Compliance:

    • Take and follow instructions from your supervisor to ensure the smooth running of survey operations.
  • Safety Compliance:

    • Ensure that all work is conducted according to the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) standards.
    • Follow the company’s safety motto: “Nothing is so important that it cannot be done safely.”
