Job Purpose:

To meet defined performance targets in the mining section by building operator capabilities and overseeing the daily mining operations. This role requires planning, organizing, and controlling mining activities, as well as stepping in as a Relieving Shift Boss when necessary.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Production & Safety Management:

    • Manage crew to meet production targets.
    • Ensure crew competence and demonstrate a continuous drive for improvement.
    • Manage safety, health, and environmental concerns in the section.
    • Conduct statutory inspections (e.g., gas & ventilation tests).
    • Ensure all workers use personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow safety protocols.
  • Relieving Shift Boss Duties:

    • Act as a Relieving Shift Boss when required.
    • Represent the Shift Boss in Operational Excellence (OE) meetings.
    • Transfer OE reports to other Miners and Artisans.
    • Manage SAP inputs (e.g., time, attendance, orders) when relieving.
  • Team Leadership & Development:

    • Coach and develop the mining crew, identify training needs, and ensure compliance with training matrices.
    • Oversee safe transportation of crew members.
    • Conduct performance reviews and provide constructive feedback.
    • Perform risk assessments and rescue drills with the team.
  • Operational Excellence:

    • Manage the availability of necessary materials and resources for mining activities.
    • Ensure a smooth transition of work between shifts.
    • Assist with technical projects and contribute to organizational change initiatives.
    • Maintain high housekeeping standards in the section.

Educational Requirements:

  • National Senior Certificate/Full N3 (with Mathematics and English/Business English).
  • Valid Blasting Certificate (for Fiery Mines).
  • Valid First Aid Certificate.
  • Valid Red Ticket (or ability to obtain one).
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Gas Testing Certificate (8 gasses).
  • Competent A Certificate.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2+ years of relevant underground coal mining experience.

Certifications & Licenses:

  • C_Blasting Certificate (Underground).
  • C_Gas Testing Certificate.
  • C_Flameproof Certificate.
