Job Summary:

The Workshop Assistant will report to the Assistant Building Foreman and provide support to the Civil/Building Maintenance team. The role involves general maintenance in the civil section and on-site, as well as managing stock in the civil section stores.


Minimum Requirements:

  • Grade 12
  • 1 year of experience in a civil workshop environment
  • Code EB driver’s license and the ability to pass Rand Water’s K53 Test
  • Trained to check fire extinguishers and knowledge of basic civil trades and scaffolding

Primary Duties:

  • Maintain stock levels of materials with proper record-keeping, stock taking, and general housekeeping in the civil stores.
  • Issue and receive tools, materials, and equipment to artisans as needed.
  • Inspect portable electrical tools, hand tools, and fire extinguishers.
  • Collect spares and equipment from suppliers.
  • Assist Carpenters with repairing door locks, replacing swollen doors, fixing cupboard locks, notice boards, and broken window panes.
  • Assist Bricklayers with patchwork, minor brickwork, and plastering of walls.
  • Assist Painters with patchwork on ceilings, walls, doors, and window frames, varnishing cupboards and office furniture.
  • Assist Plumbers with minor repairs on taps, toilets, and sealing leaking roofs, gutters, and blocked drains.
  • Perform administrative tasks like completing vehicle logbooks, job cards, and time sheets.
  • Conduct daily vehicle checks.
  • General housekeeping.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of civil trades.
  • Understanding of safety procedures.
  • Familiarity with stores procedures and stock-taking.
  • Knowledge of ISO9001, ISO14001, and OHSAS18001.
