Specialist Underwriter: Group Risk

Role Overview
Old Mutual seeks a talented Specialist Underwriter to join its team. The role involves using specialist technical knowledge to assess risk and manage cases exceeding the evidence of health (free cover limit). This individual will handle complex, high-value, or contentious cases, manage a small team, and help develop best practices in line with industry developments.
Key Responsibilities
Risk Management:
- Evaluate and decide on high-value group risk underwriting cases.
- Manage escalations, complaints, and complex underwriting queries.
- Ensure quality assurance and conduct audits on underwriting work.
Leadership:
- Lead a team of 3–5 underwriting staff (administrative and technical).
- Provide technical support and coaching to team members.
- Drive underwriting projects, process improvements, and IT developments.
Stakeholder Engagement:
- Build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Liaise with reinsurers, clients, and intermediaries to negotiate underwriting decisions.
- Collaborate with pricing, actuarial, and corporate business teams.
Process Improvements:
- Update best-practice guidelines in line with clinical and industry trends.
- Identify and implement process changes to improve customer experience.
Role Requirements
Minimum Qualifications and Experience:
- Education:
- Matric with Biology, Mathematics, or Accounting (essential).
- A BSc in Health/Life Sciences, Medically aligned degree, or BCom Business Science/Accounting (advantageous).
- Experience:
- 5+ years as a Life Underwriter in Financial Services.
- Proven underwriting authority with limits exceeding R5,000,000.
- Line management and technical support experience (advantageous).
- Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Knowledge:
- Underwriting operations, processes, and best practices.
- South African labour laws and HR best practices.

- Ability to handle confidential information.
