Position Purpose
Assist the Train Driver in the safe and efficient handling of various types of trains/locomotives to ensure freight or cargo reaches its destination on time and in optimal condition, meeting customer needs.
Position Outputs
Operational Duties
Sign-On Procedures:
- Report to the designated workplace.
- Receive and prepare allocated locomotive duties.
Locomotive Preparation:
- Check, clean, and supplement equipment.
- Perform brake tests and couple locomotives.
Communication Equipment:
- Obtain and test communication devices like radios and telemeters.
Train Preparation:
- Conduct pre-trip inspections and ensure roadworthiness.
- Attach/detach vehicles and complete necessary documentation.
Shunting Activities:
- Perform truck shunting and placement as per directives.
- Update vehicle lists and ensure load placement accuracy.
Train Movement Assistance:
- Support the Train Driver en route by monitoring safety and performance.
- Address emergencies and incidents efficiently.
Administrative Duties:
- Complete and submit train journals.
Qualifications and Experience
Education:
- Grade 12 with Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science.
Other Requirements:
Physical Requirements:
- Must be at least 1.6m tall.
- Capable of lifting heavy objects.
- Psychomotor ability (assessed via Vienna Testing System).
- Must meet mental, visual, and hearing fitness standards.
Training:
- Successful completion of theoretical and practical training for Train Assistant certification.
- Willingness to undergo periodic medical and behavioral assessments.
