About the Position
North-West University (Potchefstroom Campus) – Division: Residence and Catering – is hiring two Assistant Shift Managers for the Drakenstein Restaurant. This role supports the Shift Manager in the daily operations of the restaurant.
Key Responsibilities
Stock Control
-
Safeguard restaurant stock using Key Control, FIFO, and regular stock counts.

Optimize the stock control system.
Quality Control
-
Maximize restaurant profits by ensuring quality products, excellent customer service, and effective asset management.
Operations
-
Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements.

Support the Shift Manager in preparing menu items to meet customer standards.

Maintain gross profit margins within budget and ensure financial control.
Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)
-
Maintain a safe working environment for both staff and customers.
People Management
-
Manage contract staff according to the current service contract.
Personal Development
-
Stay updated with industry trends and participate in available training opportunities.
Key Competencies
Functional/Technical Competencies
-
Knowledge of the Liquor Act (national/provincial).
-
Experience in restaurant operations.
-
Computer literacy, especially with Point of Sale (POS) systems.
-
Ability to compile menus and calculate costs.
-
Understanding of OHS practices, hygiene, and safety standards in restaurants.
Behavioural Competencies
-
Strong stock control skills in a food and beverage environment.

Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
-
Willingness to work shifts.
Minimum Requirements
-
Grade 12 (NQF Level 4)

Valid driver’s license (Code B)
-
2 years’ junior management experience in a restaurant
-
1 year of stock control experience
Remuneration
The total annual package will align with NWU’s policy guidelines and the advertised appointment level.
