Job Description
SANBS is seeking a Qualified Blood Bank Technician and Qualified Blood Bank Technologist to perform routine testing functions in blood banks, including compatibility tests, postnatal investigations, and preliminary transfusion reaction investigations according to Standard Operating Procedures.
Key Responsibilities
Blood Bank Technician
Perform manual and automated operational functions within required timeframes.
Check blood stock levels and report expired units.
Store reagents and proficiency tests correctly.
Dispose of waste according to procedures and maintain traceability records.
Monitor and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring proper functionality.
Comply with quality and risk management standards.
Document and report customer queries, complaints, and compliments.
Blood Bank Technologist
Perform all blood bank operational functions within set timeframes.
Deputise for the Shift Supervisor/Blood Bank Supervisor when necessary.
Check and verify test results performed by technicians and trainees.
Assist with training and competency assessments.
Perform secondary testing, including antibody investigations and transfusion reaction investigations.
Ensure compliance with accreditation, quality control, and proficiency testing standards.
Maintain knowledge of industry developments and acquire Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points.
Support customer relations by professionally handling medical staff queries.
General Responsibilities
Shift work, weekend duties, and overtime as required.
Occasional local and national travel.
Must be in good health with reasonable endurance and mobility.
Attention to detail and good eyesight (not colour blind).
Minimum Requirements
Education
HPCSA Registered Biomedical Technician / Technologist (Blood Transfusion).
Experience & Knowledge
As required by HPCSA for Medical Technician/Technologist (Blood Transfusion).
Computer literacy in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
