Purpose of the Position:

To assist the Train Driver in ensuring the safe, efficient, and timely operation of various train types (freight, passenger, heavy haul, etc.), ensuring customer cargo is delivered in good condition and on schedule.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Locomotive Preparation:

    • Start-up checks, brake testing, equipment placement.

    • Cleaning and inspection duties.

  2. Train Preparation & Pre-trip Checks:

    • Brake tests, vehicle list, vacuum forms, train indicators.

    • Attach/detach wagons, mount telemeters.

  3. Communication Equipment Checks:

    • Ensure all devices are functional (radios, walkie-talkies, etc.).

  4. Shunting & Yard Operations:

    • Move/load trucks per work orders, update vehicle lists.

  5. Assistance En Route:

    • Signal observation, resetting trip outs, protecting train during incidents.

  6. Safety & Compliance:

    • Adhere to safety standards and SOPs.

    • Provide feedback to the Train Driver on incidents and route deviations.

  7. Administration & Record Keeping:

    • Complete Train Journal after every shift for payroll processing.


Minimum Requirements:

Education:

  • Grade 12 with Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science

Other Requirements:

  • Minimum height of 1.6 meters

  • 21 years or older (Train Driver/Control duties requirement)

  • Physically and mentally fit

  • Strong psychomotor abilities (assessed through Vienna Testing System)

  • Ability to carry heavy equipment

  • Pass medical surveillance and behavioral risk assessments

  • Willingness to undergo theoretical and practical training

  • Train working rules & operations

  • Depot and yard layout

  • Communications systems

  • Health & Safety Act, SANS 3004, BCEA

Skills:

  • Locomotive handling (electrical & diesel)

  • Observation, stress & time management

  • Reasoning, judgment, coordination

  • Literacy, communication, and basic numeracy

Attributes:

  • Safety-conscious, punctual, team player

  • Able to work shifts and under pressure

  • Self-disciplined with a strong sense of responsibility
